A number of players in the NFL are getting shuffled throughout the league and this might be vital in making the right bets. Here are some of the movements of players happening recently in the National Football League.

New York Jets defensive tackle Kris Jenkins’ return is short-lived as he extensively injured his left knee in the opening game against the Baltimore Ravens. New York Giants has recently added tight end Bear Pascoe to fill in for Kevin Boss. The move also prompted Giants to release third-year linebacker Bryan Kehl.

These player movements will certainly have an effect on how the NFL tourney this year will turn out, especially on the betting part. Strategic Matchmaking By Pacquiao: A Response To Ricardo Lois

In a recent article by Examiner.com’s Ricardo Lois, the respected scribe and boxing radio show host posted some points that insinuate that Manny Pacquiao’s meteoric rise through the ranks is, in Lois’ own words, aided by weak opposition. Pacquiao’s rocket-like ascent from super featherweight to junior middleweight is only possible because the seven-division champion ran through big names who were in decline and past their prime (at least it’s not munching on ‘power pellets’).

Allow this writer to make a response to such suggestion.

Pacquiao probably had the toughest fights of his career as a featherweight and super featherweight. From lightweight and up, it really looked like as if every opponent Pacquiao faced was a cakewalk. Arguably true. But then, let this writer speak out his arguments.

Pacquiao’s only fight in lightweight was a title bid against then WBC lightweight champion and former Olympian David Diaz. Sure, Diaz was not the toughest titleholder in the division at that point and Pacquiao could have chosen names like Nate Campbell and Joel Casamayor, as all three fought in March 2008 and were pretty much available to fight each other at the time. Campbell then held the IBF, WBO, and WBA lightweight crowns while Casamayor was then the WBO interim champion.

Considered a paper champion at lightweight, the fact remains that Diaz sent Pacquiao’s archnemesis Erik Morales into a semi-retirement state. Morales still remains as the last fighter to beat Pacquiao.

Next fight for Pacquiao was a welterweight dream match against Oscar dela Hoya. Many people seem to forget that it was Oscar who cherry-picked Pacquiao after the former’s rematch with Floyd Mayweather, Jr. collapsed when Money May “retired” from the sport of boxing. A lot of people did not even give Pacquiao much of a chance, from the casual fans to boxing experts. Even a congressman from the Philippines tried to persuade Philippine sports authorities to stop the Pacquiao-Dela Hoya match because Pacquiao is endangering himself in a huge mismatch.

A mismatch indeed, only it was the other way around. The fight against Dela Hoya was no product of strategic matchmaking from the Pacquiao camp, as what Lois’ article insinuates. Rather, it was a matter of confident handpicking that went down south exponentially.

Ricky Hatton was coming off an impressive win against Paulie Malignaggi prior to facing the Pacman. With a new trainer in the person of Floyd Mayweather, Sr., Hatton was a greatly improved fighter, or so they say. Is this fight another strategic matchmaking scheme by Pacquiao’s camp? The answer is a big no.

For starters, Hatton was then the lineal champion at the light welterweight division and has only lost once to Floyd Mayweather, whom he fought at welterweight. Hatton was also undefeated as a light welter. People were also demanding a showdown between the Brit and the Filipino. And lastly, was there anyone else worthy to face Pacquiao at that particular moment? Really, was there anyone else?

Miguel Cotto was the first legitimate welterweight Pacquiao has ever faced. A stylistic power-puncher, many, writer included, felt that Cotto was damaged goods by the time he went up against Pacquiao. Still, Cotto lost only once and was the reigning WBO welterweight champion, so pretty much it was a good deal. Cotto at the time and up until now is no weak opposition.

However, it can be argued that Shane Mosley was available for a fight and a Pacquiao-Mosley showdown could have been a classic. It did not happen not because of another strategic maneuvering to pit Pacquiao against lesser opponents, but rather, a promotional move to keep the money in-house.

As for Joshua Clottey, he is ranked as one of the top 10 welterweights when he fought Pacquiao. Clottey himself also held the IBF welterweight title for a while. People need to understand that the Clottey fight only materialized after negotiations for the Pacquiao-Mayweather bout fell through the first time over drug testing protocols.

The only available welterweight contender at the time was Clottey as WBA welterweight champion Shane Mosley and WBC welterweight titleholder Andre Berto were slated to fight then (this was prior to the Haiti earthquake that killed thousands of Haitians, including a number of Berto’s relatives, forcing him to withdrew from the fight). Pacquiao fought Clottey simply because there was no one else left to fight.

Going back, it really does appear that Pacquiao seemed to just breeze through the said fighters, despite their reputation as elite contenders in the sport. That said, one can simply attribute such fact to Pacquiao’s dedication, undeniably strict work ethic, and determination to be the best at what he does.

Why the Vancouver Canucks Sucks

I just went over to Canada to visit my aunt and my uncle. And like any traditional Canadians (even naturalized ones), they are crazy over hockey. And they took me to an ice hockey game that features the Vancouver Canucks against another ice hockey team whose name I cannot remember, mainly because I am not much that into hockey and the only Canadian superstar athlete I know plays basketball. But what made me vividly remember the Vancouver Canucks? Two words. THEY SUCK!

I really don’t have a thing for ice hockey but I can’t help but notice how people really hated the Canucks. Someone even said they would score against themselves because how really bad they are. And from what I understand of the game (though little), the Canucks do really deserve such treatment. And if I were a betting man, I would not in my life bet my money on those losers. Instead, I would find myself a Vancouver escort and spend the money on her and really have a great time. And I would really feel good about myself too.

Going back, I did some research on the Canucks, primarily because I want to get to the bottom of it all. And I did, or perhaps I am just at the tip of the iceberg and don’t know Sh!t about hockey. Anyways, the Canucks made it to the Finals twice (which is already an achievement if you really think about it). But getting blitzed in the Finals without a fight is pretty much a measure of how you suck. And that sucks, really.

Why is Everybody World Cup Crazy?

Seriously, why is everyone so hyped up in a sporting event that does not even entail the whole world to begin with? Let me count 5 good reasons and hopefully make a very careful analysis on each reason.

Reason #1: Everybody is crazy about balls. This fascination with balls dates back to the olden times. Romans like balls made of iron and that has spikes to it. Ancient Greeks pretty much love to throw heavy balls to see how far they can throw them around. Basically. It’s a guy thing. For women, it is pretty obvious why they love balls. They do even have a couple of orbs that they can use to manipulate men, but I will not delve into that kind of balling.

Reason #2: When a player scores a goal, it is a perfect excuse to go crazy, like taking off your shirt and punch the guy next to you. Perfectly a good excuse to start a brawl too.

Reason#3: People from other nations that do not have a team in World Cup can join too. Philippines for example. We do not have a very effective football theme but somehow, World Cup here has hit fever pitch. And I am pretty much certain the Philippine government has made some plans as to how to incorporate the World Cup spirit to achieve their goals, whatever that means.

Reason #4: We get to see naked women. Seriously, strip bets are around gents. Don’t know which bars though.

Reason #5: We are here to see nations we hate go down in flames! Blast Germany!

The New York Mets were written off as pretenders in the National League East after suffering through an injury-plagued season last year, but they're right in the thick of things with the second half on the horizon.

The surprising Mets look to close in on first-place Atlanta when they take on the Detroit Tigers in the finale of a three-game interleague series on Thursday night at Citi Field.

In stark contrast to what happened last season, New York has mostly avoided the injury bug this year. That said, the Mets continue to cash with Luis Castillo (foot) on the 15-day disabled list and Carlos Beltran (knee) on the 60-day DL.

One of the best home and runline wagers in baseball, New York sends Hisanori Takahashi (6-2, 3.13 ERA) to the hill on Thursday night. Takahashi tossed six scoreless innings to get the win in the Mets' 4-0 victory as +185 underdogs over the Yankees last Friday.

The Tigers counter with Armando Galarraga (2-1, 3.32 ERA), as they look to ride his hot hand. Detroit is 5-1 against the moneyline in Galarraga's last six starts, including four consecutive wins.

Toronto needs to be at its best on Thursday night with Adam Wainwright (10-4, 2.23 ERA) taking his turn for St. Louis. If not for Colorado's Ubaldo Jimenez, Wainwright would be among the frontrunners for the NL Cy Young award.

Brandon Morrow (4-5, 4.97 ERA) toes the rubber for the Jays opposite Wainwright. The hardthrowing righthander has a 1.89 ERA in his last three outings, but has a 5.62 ERA in night games this season.

Tonights Free Baseball Pick: Take the Blue jays.

Later on Thursday night, it'll be a battle of disappointing starters when the Texas Rangers and Pittsburgh Pirates close out a three-game set at Rangers Ballpark in Arlington.

Scott Feldman (5-6, 5.16 ERA) was the Rangers' opening day starter, but he's struggled in his role atop their rotation. At least Feldman has a 2.89 ERA in his last three trips to the mound.

Jeff Karstens (2-2, 4.72) goes for the Pirates, who've been awful as a road wager this season. To make matters worse, Pittsburgh is only 2-9 against the moneyline in Karsten's last 11 starts.

Another Filipino Bites the Canvas

First it was Brian Viloria. Then Marvin Sonsona. Then Ana Julaton. Seems like the topnotch Filipino boxers are getting pounded one by one. And last Sunday, another high profile Filipino champion got his share of pounding.

Former WBC light flyweight champion Rodel Mayol got dethroned by Mexican rival Nino Romero, in a bout that showcased how to bring on the headbutts and lose all the way. Mayol was clearly dominating the early rounds, outboxing Romero who tried to bring the fight to the Filipino but could not just land the telling blows.

That was until Romero bullied Mayol and made the Filipino fight his fight. Mayol can punch but Romero clearly have the upper hand once the game became up close and personal. It seemed Mayol lost his ground after he got deducted two points for head butting, and there is no arguing an excuse about this one.

Mayol’s defeat brings up a general, though unwritten rule in boxing – if you are fighting someone in his backyard, make sure you knock him out, even if you are the champion.

Yo Mayol! You can’t really expect to win on points if you fight on foreign grounds and you are fighting the hometown bet now, can you?

Maybe you should have pressed harder and tried to blast Romero out of the water. After all, Romero "uppercutted" you in the nut, right?

But day was not yet lost for the Filipinos as Edren Dapudong did follow the aforementioned rule and literally drilled Mexico’s Jesus “Destroyer” Jimenez to the canvas and nailed him there for the count.

Dapudong knocked Jimenez down twice. Jimenez, the taller, bigger and harder punching guy. Yeah, Dapudong knocked him out.

World Cup News: Uruguay is Likely to Win in Group A

With the Football World Cup rearing its head at the corner, many people are now making quite a few winning predictions and analysis on the World Cup Betting Odds. The World Cups’s championship landscape might change since crowd favorite

A Decade of Manny Pacquiao

One can make viable and laudable arguments why Pacquiao deserves the honor of being named the Fighter of The Decade. He has impressive wins over legendary figures of the sport. His wars with Mexico’s finest are in the record books and will be known to future generations. His climb through the weight scales and the fashion of which he conquers a division is matched only by a handful.

Long before he was called the Pacman, Pacquiao is baptized as the Destroyer. And aptly so. As young boxer, Pacquiao’s wins were garnered by the raw power of his left hand. But through this past decade, we all saw how Manny became the man he is and the complete boxer we might never witness.

When Manny Pacquiao realized that boxing was his ticket of getting out of poverty, he honed his skills with so much zeal that his handiwork became stuff of legend. His exploits in the ring is fueled by poverty, no doubt. But even after he got out of that hole and up the ladder of the social strata, his passion for boxing never wavered.

As esteemed trainer Freddie Roach pointed out, Pacquiao “is like a sponge.” Give him new tricks to learn and he will master it. And he became an adept of the sport that Roach ultimately believes that Pacquiao will never reach his maximum potential because he is always on the learning curve, eager to soak up all the wisdom he can digest. But the evolution is apparent. As one boxing expert puts it, Pacquiao has transformed from a “whirlwind slugger to a boxer-puncher.” But will we ever see him come full circle with his boxing skills and greatness? One can only wonder.

Pacquiao’s Decade Run

The Boxing Writers Association of America has recently named Manny Pacquiao as the best fighter in the past 10 years (2000-2009). In that period, Pacquiao amassed a total of 23 wins against one loss and two even bouts, with 20 victories by way of knockout (87% knockout rate).

The following is a list of Pacquiao’s best fights from each year, from 2000-2009.

Pacquiao TKO. Nedal Hussein (2000)

Oct. 14, 2000; Antipolo City, Philippines – Pacquiao went up against then undefeated Nedal Hussein (18-0) and got a tough fight from the Australian. Hussein probably used every illegal tactics against Pacquiao, but a lean straight left from Hussein knocked Pacquiao down in the 4th. Pacquia recovered and rallied with combinations until in the 10th, when his punches created a huge gash in Hussein’s cheek. The ringside doctor ruled Hussein could no longer continue. With Pacquiao leading on all scorecards, he was given the TKO victory.

Pacquiao KO Lelhohonohlo Ledwaba (2001)

June 23, 2001; Las Vegas, USA – Pacquiao’s first fought in the United States as a quick replacement against then IBF super bantamweight champion Lelhohonohlo Ledwaba (33-1-1). This bout also marked the beginning of the Pacquiao-Roach relationship. In the fight, the skillful and more talented Ledwaba was simply overwhelmed by the Filipino’s combination of aggression, speed, and raw punching power. Pacquiao’s decked the South African in the second round, and followed up with barrages of power punches and lightning fast combinations. Ledwaba was finally knocked down again in the sixth after getting tagged with a powerful left. Shortly after, Pacquiao knocked him out.

Pacquiao TKO Jorge Eliecer Julio (2002)

July 8, 2002; Memphis, USA – In his second title defense of the IBF super bantamweight title, Pacquiao demolished Jorge Julio (44-3) inside two rounds. Julio, a notable boxer with more than decent punching power, was no match for the blinding speed and tenacity of Pacquiao, who was improving under the tutelage of Roach. Julio went down twice in the second round and was getting chopped with another barrage from Pacquiao when the referee called a halt to the bout.

Pacquiao TKO Marco Antonio Barrera (2003)

Nov. 15, 2003; San Antonio, Texas – Pacquiao went up against the legendary Marco Antonio Barrera (57-3) in the former’s first fight as a featherweight. In a very action-packed, seesaw slugfest between two aggressive fighters, Barrera displayed more technical flair. However, Pacquiao’s tenacity and Barrera’s willingness to engage gave the Filipino the upper hand. As the fight wore on, Pacquiao’s power punches and combinations took a toll on Barrera, leaving him too weak to battle in the 9th round. But the Mexican prodded on until the 11th round when Barrera’s corner threw the towel after seeing their man helpless and totally battered in the face of a Pacquiao onslaught.

Pacquiao Draw Juan Manuel Marquez (2004)

May 8, 2004; Las Vegas – In a fight that would end in a controversial draw, Pacquiao started strong and hammered Juan Manuel Marquez (42-2) three times to the canvas in the first round. With many people sensing a Pacquiao victory, the tide was suddenly turned when Marquez, a brilliant counterpuncher, would stage a comeback and win most of the following rounds. Although the fight was declared a draw, one judge revealed that he made an error on the scorecards that would have given Pacquiao victory. Judge Burt Clements scored the first round 10-7 for Pacquiao when it should have been 10-6. Two judges scored the bout 115-110, with one judge favoring one fighter over the other.

Erik Morales UD Pacquiao (2005)

March 19, 2005; Las Vegas – In a classic battle that deserves a spot in the boxing’s records, Mexico’s Erik Morales (47-2) finally put a halt to Pacquiao’s string of victories over Mexican fighters. Morales efficiently used the ring and outbox a very game but obviously overmatched Pacquiao, who struggled to land his blows on the Mexican. The fight revealed that Pacquiao is solely dependent on his left hand, which prompted coach Roach to train Pacquiao to use his right hand as major offensive weapon. Ten months later, Pacquiao and Morales met again and in a very exciting bout, Pacquiao avenged his loss with 10th round knockout. They met again in 2007, with Pacquiao finishing the series with a TKO in the 3rd round.

Pacquiao UD Oscar Larios (2006)

Aug. 2, 2006; Manila, Philippines – Pacquiao never took Oscar Larios (56-5-1) seriously. But Larios proved that he was not just some bum by starting out strong and nailed Pacquiao with powerful combinations that had him pressed against the ropes. Pacquiao was able to recover and turned the tables when his punches created a gash over Larios’s left eye. The fight went the distance, with Larios going down in the 7th and 12th rounds. Larios was gracious in defeat and acknowledged Pacquiao’s greatness in the ring.

Pacquiao KO Jorge Solis (2007)

April 13, 2007; Texas, USA – Then undefeated Jorge Solis (32-0-2) challenged Pacquiao for the latter’s WBC Internetional Featherweight title, but was soundly defeated in eight rounds. The taller and lankier Solis had a good start, effectively using his jab to set his combinations. Pacquiao suffered a small cut under the left eyebrow in the 6th round when they accidentally butted the heads. Pacquiao sensed the urgency to finish the fight immediately, as the cut will bother him soon enough. In the 8th round, Pacquiao unleashed a torrent of punches that sent Solis to the canvas. Shortly after, Pacquiao knocked out Solis with a stinging left straight to the head.

Pacquiao TKO Oscar dela Hoya (2008)

Dec. 6, 2008; Las Vegas – When Oscar dela Hoya was left with no Floyd Mayweather for a rematch, he challenged Pacquiao in a welterweight showdown. Prior to the fight, many boxing pundits viewed that Pacquiao was way out of his league, citing the obvious physical advantages Dela Hoya possessed. However, speed and extreme movement negated all advantages Dela Hoya had. The Golden Boy was getting peppered with lead lefts and his face was at the end of a brutal punishment. With his ward taking a beating without fighting back, trainer Nacho Beristain pleaded Oscar to quit, which he did at the end of the 8th round.

Pacquiao KO Ricky Hatton (2009)

May 2, 2009; Las Vegas – in a fight that showed a very well-rounded and greatly improved Pacquiao, the Filipino proved to be more than a match for Britain’s Ricky Hatton (45-1). Pacquiao used Hatton’s own aggression, tagging the Brit with right hooks every time Hatton charges in. Hatton was downed twice in the 1st round and seemed he recovered in the second round when Pacquiao let loose a left hook that landed on Hatton’s chin and knocked him out cold. It took awhile before Hatton regained consciousness. Hatton’s career has been in a limbo since.

Within the past decade, Pacquiao became the only boxer ever to win seven titles in as many weight classes and the only fighter who have four lineal championships to his name. He may have been defeated, but like all true champions before him, Pacquiao understood that from defeat, lessons are learned and through those lessons, an individual acquires the blueprint to be better.

On the baseball field, the Tampa Bay Rays gave the New York Yankees a quick yet clinical but brash dose of some good old baseball action. Those whose handicaps have cost them more than a dime, it is high time they calculate their odds using a baseball whip.

The Tampa Bay victory over the Yankees has definitely altered the universal Odds to win the World Series. Coming in highly favored against the Rays, the New York Yankees may have lost a slight of its edge en route to the World Series. But it would be foolish to discount the Yankees.

That said, the Rays were blazing hot; filling the bases and stealing points and hitting home runs. Simply put, the Rays’ five-man rotation is unbeatable and New York Yankees basically fell prey to the Rays.

Odds say the Rays will be in the World Series. Who’s there to argue?

A lot of people have been making a big fuss over the recent remodification Yahoo! Sports has made (read: Kevin Iole) on their pound-for-pound rankings. While this writer never really wanted to join in on the mix, a number of people have sent their questions with regards to the issue and would like to hear the thoughts of yours truly. So in view of a large public demand (more or less 6 people), here are my two cents.

The pound-for-pound list is a glorified catalogue ranking the best fighters of today if they were in their prime and of the same size, height, weight, and reach. Aside from abilities and overall boxing skills, the quality of opposition is also scrutinized and how they won against their opponents is also looked at very closely.

The top dog remains the top dog until he is either beaten, retires, or somebody from another division has outperformed him. As for the case of Floyd Mayweather, who was the holder of the P4P throne until he semi-retired in 2007, he was (still is) on the top of his game and was undefeated. His feats inside the ring and the quality of opponents he fought (Castillo, Gatti, Judah, Dela Hoya, and Hatton) and the way he defeated them are stuff of legend to say the least.

But the vacuum he created after going into a 2-year layoff was quickly filled by Manny Pacquiao, the consensus #2. Pacquiao started his run with a split decision victory over archrival Juan Manuel Marquez and along the way, bested former Mayweather foes Dela Hoya and Ricky Hatton in a much devastating fashion, and defeated two top welterweights, Miguel Cotto and Joshua Clottey. Pacquiao also achieved two difficult feats within the same period – to become the first boxer to win seven titles in seven different weight divisions and the only fighter with four lineal (the man who beat the man) championships under his belt.

In contrast, Mayweather only fought twice since his return. Those two bouts are not enough to catapult him to the top rankings. For one, Mayweather fought an aging lightweight champion in Juan Manuel Marquez. Virtually, Marquez was not just a bloated fighter at welterweight; he was slower, sluggish, and obviously smaller than Money May. Add to the mix is the fact that Mayweather went two pounds over the catch weight agreement and opted to keep them instead and pay the penalty.

Simply put, despite the boxing clinic Mayweather put on Marquez, you cannot really credit Money May if you look at it pound for pound.

Mayweather’s victory over Shane Mosley is much more different despite the latter’s advance in age. Mosley is the lineal champion at welterweight (the division where they fought) and coming off from a knockout victory over then much feared Antonio Margarito over a year ago. Mosley was a real threat and he showed it on the second round. Mayweather’s domination of Mosley thereafter showed how truly great Mayweather is. The victory also gave Mayweather the lineal championship, whether he acknowledges that or not.

But one has to wonder, since you can’t count the Marquez victory, does the Mosley win really enough to overtake Pacquiao? Quite simply, no.

Pacquiao’s the top dog until he is either beaten, retires, or somebody from another division outperforms him in terms of the quality of opponents and the fashion of their victories.

Enough said.

Nowitzki, Artest Make West an Interesting Playoffs Pool

The first round of the NBA playoffs showcased a lot of great moments for the stellar and non-stellar players alike. Dallas Mavericks, in their first meeting against their bitter rivals, the San Antonio Spurs, did came out with a bang as the Mavs went on to score 100-94. But more impressive is the 32-year old Dirk Nowitzki. The German-born NBA superstar made all but two of his 14 attempts at the basket and never missed any of his 12 free throws.

But do expect the Spurs to rally with a strong comeback, as they always do. If basketball is an everyday affair, it might be best that fans get their NBA tickets as early as possible. The Spurs and the Mavericks are just a couple of the best reason why they should.

On the same conference, Ron Artest displayed a shade of Dennis Rodman when he shut down Oklahoma Thunder’s scoring leader, Kevin Durant. In a very imposing play of basketball defense, Artest held Durant so good that the latter only scored 7 out of 24 shots. If this goes any further, expect the Lakers to start another title run.

A number of people are not giving Shane Mosley much of a chance to win in his upcoming bout against former world champion and pound-for-pound Floyd Mayweather, Jr. From the common men in the streets to the gurus of the sport, majority says that Mosley just don’t have it to beat Mayweather.

One of those people is Freddie Roach, mentor of seven-division champion Manny Pacquiao.

“I think Mayweather would outbox him. I think Mayweather would win that fight. It’s a very competitive, good fight,” the four-time BWAA Trainer of the Year recipient said. But he also made clear that he wants Mosley to win.

Roach would go on and say that Mosley prefers to have his opponents come to him and not the other way around. Against Mayweather, Mosley is expected to do the opposite. And chasing Mayweather has its pitfalls for the pursuer.

No matter how boring Mayweather’s style of boxing is, he has won all his 40 bouts. Mosley seeks to end that streak. A herculean task for the third boxer to be endowed with the moniker “Sugar,” but Mosley can get the job done. Chances may be slim, but he can probably pull an upset and then square off with the other top dog of the welterweight division, Pacquiao.

Shane Mosley is the first elite welterweight Money May will face.

If people would really think about it, the last time Mayweather fought against a legitimate welter was almost four years ago, against Carlo Baldomir. And while Baldomir is a true welterweight, he is not and will never be in the top echelon of the said division.

If you look at Mosley, the guy is not a mere paper titleholder of the house, he is the MAN. Whether you have Pacquiao in the top spot at welterweight, Mosley is the lineal champion and that alone is a clear indication of how elite he is.

As far as skills are concerned, Mosley may not be overwhelmingly gifted in contrast with his next opponent, but he has the power, the experience, and the physical attributes to make it an interesting matchup.

Shane Mosley is the hungrier of the two.

Both boxers say they are out to fight with the best. Of this, only Mosley can backup with his resume. He has fought a prime Oscar Dela Hoya, Vernon Forrest, Fernando Vargas, Miguel Cotto, and Antonio Margarito (who was avoided by many prior to the controversial hand wraps issue). After the Margarito bout, no one seemed to want to share the ring with him.

The long absence from the ring has no doubt added fuel to his hunger of proving that he is still the best and his record shows that he is more than willing to fight with the best. If hunger is a huge motivation, Mosley will destroy Mayweather for sure.

Shane’s age will come in to play.

At 38 years old, Mosley is no doubt in the twilight of his career and is seeking a few more fights to notch on his belt. Many would say that his skills have eroded through the years and the long layoff will certainly affect his performance on May 1st. That said, it would be so wrong to write Mosley off because of his age.

When he fought Margarito last year, many boxing analysts assumed that his age will put him at a big disadvantage. Mosley, old as he may be, did not look like a 37-year old when he pummeled the Mexican into submission. If history does repeat itself, it may very well on May 1st.

If Mayweather thinks he is fighting an old man, he might be in for a surprise.

My First Pair of (Pseudo)Basketball Shoes

I am a basketball nut since my childhood years, which pretty much explains my fascination for basketball shoes, especially Jordans. But I have never amassed any collection of sneakers, as much as I consider myself a sneakers aficionado.

Back when I was a child, my dad really pushed me to be a tennis player. He would bring me along every time he plays (or not, as long as his destination is our local tennis court). While my dad really tried to rub the tennis gusto on me, basketball had the more gravitational pull as far as sports is concerned. He even bought me a complete tennis set, racquets, shoes, and all, in a failed attempt to lure me in his preferred sport.

On the other hand, I was getting much better at basketball and when I was 11 years old, I entered my first basketball tournament. Of course, like any kid would have done, I asked my dad if he could get me a pair of basketball shoes (to be specific, I asked for the one with the star on the logo).

Being the supportive father he is, my dad did get me a pair of crazy kicks.

A pair of low-cut, vintage, classic, black Robertson sneakers.

One could only imagine the embarrassment I was to feel during game time, considering the way I bragged about me getting the pair that I wanted.

So I paraded and played, and went on to be one of the leading scorers that day. That alone would have made my day. But when I got home, I got a big surprise that I would never forget – my dad bought me the pair I wanted right after the game.

We went on to become third best team in our category in that particular tournament.

When the talks for the Manny Pacquiao-Floyd Mayweather ended over the issue of Olympic-style random blood testing, many boxing fans and writer included, got disappointed.

No other fight has the gravity of the matchup between the current Pound-for-Pound king and the former holder of the throne since the times of Sugar Ray Leonar, Marvin Hagler, Thomas Hearns, and Roberto Duran.

It is quite easy to see why fans would want this fight and why the sport of boxing needs this mega bout to happen.

But with the drug testing issue effectively halting the negotiations, Lady Luck has opened great windows of opportunities that are certainly a treat times two for those who follow the sport.

After the failed negotiations with Mayweather and his side, Pacquiao’s camp moved on and quickly found a replacement in tough welterweight Joshua Clottey. Ghana’s face of boxing and former IBF welterweight champion Clottey is certainly a no pushover and does present a tough challenge for the reigning WBO welterweight champion.

It may not be a huge seller compared to a fight that bills Pacquiao and Mayweather, but this proves that Pacquiao takes on all comers and the best available boxer at the time was Clottey. It is utterly pointless to bring in the names of Yuri Foreman, Juan Manuel Marquez, and Paulie Malignaggi as quick substitutes.

The possibility that the Pacquiao-Clottey fight will sell big is huge, despite the lack of popularity points by the Ghana native. One major reason is they will be fighting in the Cowboys Stadium. That and the fact that Pacquiao got a free publicity boost from former US President George W. Bush.

That said, a greater fight looms over the horizon. It is not yet a done deal, but it is the next best thing to a Pacquiao-Mayweather showdown. WBC welterweight titlist Andre Berto withdrew from his face-off with Shane Mosley after tragedy struck Haiti, his home country. Berto lost several members of his family after a killer earthquake devastated Haiti and its people.

With Berto’s withdrawal, cruel as it may seem, has left a sweet offering for boxing fans worldwide. Berto left a void that only Mayweather could fill and may be the opportunity he needs to get the respect he wanted for so long.

A possible collision between Mayweather and WBA welterweight boss and the division’s lineal champion Shane Mosley is almost as great and as big as a fight with Pacquiao. From every perspective, this is Mayweather’s ticket out of the blood testing mess and all that cherry-picking allegations and Mosley’s trail to a huge payday before he announces his probable retirement.

So while the boxing world may never get the fight they want, at least for the time being, we are treated to a sort of elimination tournament in the welterweight house. Four of the world’s best welterweights will clash for supremacy and recognition in the welterweight division.

The winner of Pacquiao-Clottey can set a huge stage of a boxing match with the victor of Mayweather-Mosley. And if that happens, it will be a huge shake up in the welterweight standings. For starters, two major belts will be unified (WBA and WBO). Second, the lineal championship is at stake. Third, there is a big chance that the pound-for-pound rankings will alter should Pacquiao lose to either Clottey or the winner of Mosley-Mayweather.

And all these can happen in a span of less than two months after The Event.

Can it get any better than this?

Charles went berserk (and lucky) versus the Broncos yesterday, gaining the rarely done 10-yards-per-carry average on a day when he cap his game with 25 carries. He topped it all with 259 yards,totalling his coverage over 1,000 yards for the season in a year where he was not able to average more than six carries a game until they hit Week 10. That's sick.

Derrick Johnson, Linebacker, Kansas City Chiefs. Two Chiefs? That's correct, two Chiefs made the top three. Johnson intercepted Kyle Orton TWICE, and deliver them both to the flush for six. Or maybe it was twelve,. Defensive players who are capable of scoring are rare gems and he is no exception, which makes him a very strong candidate for the MVP.

Winner of Mosley-Berto a Better Challenge for Manny Pacquiao

Freddie Roach, the esteemed boxing guru who has guided and molded several champions and top contenders, has eyed the winner of the Shane Mosley-Andre Berto slugfest should Manny Pacquiao’s camp fail to strike a deal with Floyd Mayweather. Bob Arum, Top Rank’s big boss and Pacquiao’s promoter, has already expressed interest in having Pacquiao going north the scales to challenge WBA junior middleweight champ Yuri Foreman.

Roach, however, does not discount the possibility of a Pacquiao-Mosley or Pacquiao-Berto matchups, depending on who comes out victorious in their fight on January 30, 2010. Both fighters possess speed, power, and strength that might pose a serious challenge to the current P4P main man and holder of seven weight division titles. Of the two, Mosley comes with vast ring experience while Berto supplies himself with the youth advantage.

Mosley comes to the fight as the WBA Welterweight Super Champion with a 46-5 record, with 39 wins coming by way of knockout. On the other corner, Berto holds the WBC Welterweight championship and comes to the fight with an unblemished record of 26-0, 19 wins by way of knockout. The winner could potentially set himself up with a date with Pacquiao, whose current negotiations with Mayweather are turning bitter from sour.

A fight with either Mosley or Berto is historically significant for Pacquiao. No Asian fighter has unified and became the lineal champion of the welterweight division. As of this writing, Mosley is still the lineal champ, a title espoused to him when he dismantled Antonio Margarito a year ago.

A fight between Pacquiao and the winner of the Mosley-Berto fight will set the stage for a unification fight for three alphabet titles (WBA, WBC, and the WBO belts, the latter currently held by Pacquiao) and a fight for the lineal title in the welterweight house. A victory by either Pacquiao or the winner of the Mosley-Berto fight will dramatically clean the welterweight house with the winner rising as the best welterweight boxer of today.

In addition, if Pacquiao should take this fight and win, he will become the only fighter in boxing’s history to win five lineal (the man who beat the man) championships in five different weight categories. Pacquiao has already won lineal titles in four different weight categories – flyweight (vs. Chatchai Sasakul), featherweight (vs. Marco Antonio Barrera), super featherweight (vs. Juan Manuel Marquez) and light welterweight (vs. Ricky Hatton).

Another reason why a fght between Pacquiao and the winner of Mosley-Berto is a great match for Pacquiao is that he still needs to recuperate from that busted eardrum Cotto served him their last match. Medical and boxing experts believe that March 13 is so soon for the Filipino slugger to fight again, considering that he will be training heavily eight weeks prior to the date.

Whether it is Pacquiao-Mosley matchup or a Pacquiao-Berto showdown, both fights looks to be promising when it comes to all-out action. These three fighters prefer to dish out and go toe-to-toe against any opponent.

A fight with Yuri Foreman may also provide a historical milestone for Pacquiao should he comes out victorious. Eight world titles in eight different weight classes would certainly set the bar higher in terms of boxing achievements.

But while climbing up in weight and slugging it out with the big Belarusian slash Israeli slash Bronx native may be a herculean task to begin with for the Filipino, their styles do not have that meshing factor that would make it a good and exciting fight. Foreman is more of a safety-first boxer with a dismal knockout rate (28.5%, 8 knockouts out of 28 wins). In plain simple language, Pacquiao-Foreman will not provide fight fans with any action.

Online Thread Reignites Donaire-Viloria Feud

Apparently, there are still some kinks between two Filipino champions Nonito Donaire Jr. and Brian Viloria. It can be recalled that Viloria beat Donaire and his brother Glenn in the finals of the 2000 US Olympic eliminations.

But after turning professional, it was Donaire who enjoyed large mainstream success both in and out of the ring while Viloria, due to losses in his major fights, slightly faded from the limelight. The feud between the two kicked off when Donaire directly dismissed Viloria and saying the native from Hawaii is not on his (Donaire’s) level and has nothing to offer him.

But Donaire was quick to apologize, reasoning that he was exhausted during the interview. Donaire said, “"Well I guess there is still some bad blood then. I apologized already for saying that he wasn't on my level and explained that I was just cutting weight and tired when that interview came.”

Everything seemed to be going all right for Donaire and Viloria when a thread started by Erica Navarro, Brian Viloria’s live-in partner, in a social networking site reignited the row between the two world class champions.

In her thread, Navarro blasted a certain fighter for hiring a certain trainer. Navarro and her friends went as far as calling this fighter names, including loser and copycat. Boxing insiders believe that she is referring to Donaire and his move on hiring Roberto Garcia, Viloria’s trainer, as part of his team.

Navarro posted the thread on December 21, 2009 when she and Brian learned that Garcia would miss a training day to appear at the press conference of Pinoy Power 3 / Latin Fury 13, which will be held on February 13, 2010, at the Las Vegas Hilton.

Donaire is slated to fight knockout artist Gerson “El Nene” Guerrero as one of the main bouts.

For his part, Donaire only hired Garcia as his strategist on the suggestion of his manager, Cameron Dunkin.

“I didn't think I was stepping on any one's toes hiring Robert,” Donaire commented. “Just like Freddie (Roach), I figured Robert could coach whoever he wanted. I mean he coaches my friend, Steven Luevano, a world champion, as well."

Donaire further clarified, "I just don't see what the big deal or problem is. Robert Garcia will be my strategist, not trainer at this time."

Rachel Marcial-Donaire, ever the faithful and loyal wife, came to her husband’s defense. "Well, I thought we were all friends so it's kinda sad,” said a disappointed Rachel. “I mean we invited them to all our outings, to the dinner in Manila, and we make sure if Nonito is recognized as a world champion, so is Brian."

She punctuated her piece saying, “But I'm glad I found out what she really thinks of us. I mean name-calling us "copycats"? Isn't that a high school thing?”

Mayweather Victory Over Marquez: No Glory at All

It was a mismatch right from the start. Heart was the only thing going on for Marquez – and the catch weight of 144 pounds.

But still, I hoped for a Marquez victory. I followed the 24/7 series and even if Marquez drank his own piss, I still egged myself to root for the guy they call Dinamita. But after they weighed in the night before the fight, I discounted all possibilities of a Marquez upset.

Four pounds were too much of an advantage. Did Marquez get paid for the Money’s excess weight to be beaten up like that? One can only speculate.

But the thing is, in my own opinion, Mayweather made sure he wins this fight. Of course, any fighter would want to have all the aces, but bulking up and getting away with it? The win does not, in any way, contain pride and dignity and does not elevate Mayweather to any higher heights. Instead, the win becomes a tool in another barrage of criticisms.

True, Mayweather is slick, has a good defense, and owns a pair of the fastest hands in the sport. But was he fair when he fought Marquez? Not in my eyes.

The weight issue also reminded me of a recent fight between Nonito Donaire of the Philippines and Rafael Concepcion of Panama. Donaire made the weight while Concepcion’s registered way over the limit. Donaire’s technical mastery of the sport, along with his inborn speed, helped him earn a victory at a weight disadvantage.

But Marquez did not have inborn speed. And the clear thing was his power did not climb with him. His punches didn’t even made a dent on Mayweather’s face. Instead, Dynamite Johnny invoked sarcastic smiles from Mayweather, egging the Mexican to punch a lot harder.

What was clear is that Mayweather fought someone who climbed two weight classes and also suffered a four-pound disadvantage to face him. It wasn’t the great and legendary Juan Manuel Marquez Mayweather fought, but some guy who was a bit slower, smaller, less powerful, and a lot lighter.

Mayweather may have defeated boxing’s second best fighter. But did he?

Mayweather-Marquez: Battle ofr Number 2

In just a few moments, the FORMER Number 1 Pound for Pound boxer in the world Floyd Mayweather, Jr. will return to the ring once again to battle Mexico’s legitimate Numero Uno fighter Juan Manuel Marquez. The winner of the fight will set up a potential mega-fight with the winner of Pacquiao-Cotto bout in November 14.

Dubbed as Number 1/Numero Uno, sadly, this will be a battle of who is second best fighter in the world, next to Pacquiao. No doubt both men are great in their own right, they both need to beat Pacquiao in a convincing fashion if they want to be really declared number one. That is if Cotto cannot fulfill the task laid before him.

Back to Mayweather-Marquez fight, this will be a slow, tactical fight from the get-go. The reason is that both guys are efficient counterpunchers who prefer to wait rather than initiate an exchange.

But after weighing all the factors, Mayweather seems to have the clear advantage in a lot of aspects – height, reach, hand speed, and defense. Marquez, on the other hand, is no pushover as he has proven time and again that he can adjust to the styles of his opponents and make the necessary changes in the middle and later rounds.

Will ring rust affect Mayweather’s overall performance? Will there any be ring rust at all? Will Marquez’s age show and the wear and tear he got from his wars surface? Will his ring generalship carry him through and deliver one of boxing’s greatest upset?

The world will know in a matter of moments.

The Dynamite Essence

For all reasons and their worth, I wanted Juan Manuel Marquez to knock the hell out of Floyd Mayweather, Jr., come September 19^th in Las Vegas. I have great admiration for JMM despite his sour graping rants over the controversial results of his bouts with Pacquiao. He is a legend of the sport and will definitely have his name carved in the Hall of Fame when the time comes.

But after watching the second episode of Mayweather-Marquez 24/7, I do not know whether I should react violently in disgust or let my fanatic appreciation on the man they call “Dinamita” grow exponentially. I know lots of men who have went far out of their way to gain the upper hand in every athletic contest.

Swimmers wear sharkskin suits to give them speed when gliding through water. Tennis players get the best racquets in the world so they can register a 90-mile per hour serve. Heck, even Tiger Woods has a constant supply of energy drink to keep him putting those birdies.

But drinking your own urine? Man, “Dinamita” just blew me away by watching him piss into a glass and made himself a shot of himself. Might as well call it the ‘Dynamite Essence.” And the really freaky thing about it is that Juan Manuel Marquez never batted an eyelid, no signs of gross reactions.

Marquez justified his action by stating that bladder juice contains proteins and nutrients. I say so does protein shakes and food supplements.

I still do not know how to react. Perhaps if he wins against Mayweather, I might consider making a potion made of my own spleen.

True Warrior: Oscar Larios Retires

In his whole career, Manny Pacquiao battled two Oscars and scored a victory over each. One is considered a living legend of the sport while the other was an underrated warrior. It was the latter who gave Pacquiao a tough fight that went the distance.

Personally, I never heard of Oscar Larios until he took on then super featherweight champion Manny Pacquiao in July 2006. Nicknamed Chololo, Larios has a very unique appeal that even Filipino fans come to appreciate. The two-time division champion is a class act and a friendly chump when not wearing his gloves.

My admiration for Larios grew as his fight with Pacquiao blazed on. With two fighters getting it on and pouring out everything they got since the opening bell, I was getting my money’s worth.

It was all action right from the start and even if I was rooting for Pacquiao, I would not mind a Larios victory. Of course, Pacquiao scored two knockdowns and was visibly superb in the technical aspects of the sport.

The kind of punishment Larios took from Pacquiao was so brutal that any ordinary fighter would have wilted. Not Larios. He stood there, squaring Pacquiao and was taking some to give some. That kind of a boxer is a rarity. A legend of the same name quit on his stool, but not Larios. This guy is no quitter.

He won’t be in the Hall of Fame. But for hardcore boxing fans like myself, we will always know that once there was an Oscar who slug it out with Pacquiao and did more than survive the rounds – he earned the respect and admiration of millions.

After the Pacquiao fight, Larios moved on and sought battles. But it was a medical battle that finally made a dent on his career. In July 2007, Larios was diagnosed with minor subdural hematoma, a bleeding in the brain, after he fought against Jorge Linares.

Suspended in the US due to his medical condition, Larios pick his fights outside United States. His last fight ended in a loss – a rematch with Takahiro Aoh. Their first encounter ended with Larios as the victor.

Oscar “Chololo” Larios retired with a record of 63 wins, 7 losses, 1 draw, and 39 wins by way of knockout. He reigned as WBC champion of the super bantamweight and the featherweight divisions.

Magic Man's Wizardry Fizzles Against Diaz's Hometown Edge

Fighting for the first time after losing to Ricky ‘The Hitman’ Hatton November of last year, Paulie ‘The Magic Man’ Malignaggi took on the Baby Bull, Juan Diaz in one of this year’s close encounters.

The latter edged out a unanimous decision against Malignaggi and win the NABO junior welterweight championship. Diaz also came from a devastating loss, a knockout to current lightweight kingpin Juan Manuel Marquez.

Maliganggi, however, ridiculed the decision, arguing that Diaz has the hometown advantage with three officials coming from Houston, Texas, Diaz’ home city. From that point, Paulie has the right to be upset. He has now dropped to 26-3, with 5 knockouts.

Juan Diaz redeemed himself after losing to JMM in an unsuccessful bid to defend his belts and status as lightweight’s top dog. His record now stands at 35-2, 17 via knockouts. This fight with Malignaggi is Diaz’s debut to the junior welterweight division.

Pacquiao-Cotto "Firepower" Signed and Inked

After all the seesaw debates and the arguments over the weight and the belt, the fight is signed and sealed. Manny Pacquiao will officially face WBO welterweight title holder Miguel Cotto in November 14, 2009 in Las Vegas. Dubbed as Firepower, also at stake in the fight is the newly created Diamond Belt by the WBC, which will only be laid on the line over elite fights between top fighters at certain catch weights (worthless really).

Pacquiao, the current IBO and Ring Magazine light welterweight champion, will slug it out with Cotto at 145 pounds. Initially Pacquiao’s camp, Roach in particular, wanted the fight at 142. Cotto demanded that Roach’s proposed catch weight may drain him too much and argued that it should be 145 or nothing.

After agreeing to the weight terms, the issue over Cotto’s belt was next on the debaters’ table. Cotto demanded that if Pacquiao wants a shot at his belt, Pac should fight him at the welterweight limit at 147 or no fight at all. However, the powers that be concurred that if Cotto does not defend his title at 145, he will be stripped. Guess the Puerto Rican has to go with the flow with this one.

This fight may be the most important fight of Manny Pacquiao’s career, who started his boxing profession as a straw weight (106 lbs). Should Pacquiao emerge victorious, he will become the only boxer to win seven championships in seven different divisions. He is currently even with Oscar De La Hoya with six titles each.

Elsewhere, the Mayweather-Marquez fight does not generate a lot of buzz compared to Pacquiao-Cotto mayhem. But that would still be a great fight nonetheless.

Donaire Wins Third Word Title

Nonito Donaire wins the vacant the WBA interim super flyweight belt against the tough and rugged Rafael “El Torito” Concepcion while fellow Filipino slugger Bernabe Concepcion got disqualified after unleashing a two-punch combination against WBO featherweight titlist Steve Luevano after the bell ended the seventh round.

It was good fight for Donaire, who fought someone who was way beyond the weight limit. But what interests me though is that Donaire was not able to bring down Concepcion, even when Donaire landed some crisp power shots. Does this mean that Donaire cannot carry his power as he moves up? Or was it simply Concepcion weighed 10 pounds more? You decide.

Bad news for Bernabe Concepcion, who fought his first world title fight the same night. A couple of seconds after the bell sounded in the seventh round, Concepcion tagged Luevano with a two-shot combo and dropped him to the canvas. Luevano stayed down for a couple of minutes before he got up.

Referee Jay Nady immediately disqualified Concepcion for his actions. Trainer Freedi Roach argued to Concepcion’s defense but Nady stayed firm with his call. A possible rematch between the two is now in the works.

Tua looked slow all night with Wheeler picking him apart with jabs, but the gut-wrenching uppercut was all he needed.

8. Manny Pacquiao vs. Fashan 3K Battery – Dec. 11, 2004

Defending IBF Intercontinental featherweight champ Manny Pacquiao made short work of Thailand’s Fashan 3K Battery. Pacquiao dropped his challenger four times: once in rounds two and three and twice in round four. The final knockdown was a sneaky left uppercut that came in after Pacquiao faked a right cross.

IBF Super Middleweight champ Roy Jones, Jr. dispatched former two-time champion Vinnie Pazienza in the sixth with a six-punch flurry Jones initiated and ended with a left uppercut.

What makes it memorable: Jones was on the run when he quickly delivered the final six punches of the fight in this order: left uppercut, left hook, left hook, right hook, right uppercut, left uppercut.

6. Earnie Shavers vs. Ken Norton – March 23, 1979
Despite Norton’s tight defense, Shavers eventually wore him down and knocked him down twice in the fight. The final knockdown came moments after the first, with Shavers whipping a vicious right uppercut to Norton’s face. All this within the first round.

What makes it memorable: Two old guys going at it makes it memorable. Shavers and Norton were 34 and 36, respectively, at the time of the bout. An old guy unloading such an uppercut makes it a legend.

In a title eliminator bout that would have the winner face Larry Holmes, Cooney finished a washed-up Norton in 54 seconds with a thunderous barrage of uppercuts.

What makes it memorable: Cooney battering a sitting Norton with uppercuts was just merciless. Norton retired after suffering such beating.

4. Earnie Shavers vs. Jimmy Ellis – June 18, 1973

Former heavyweight champion Jimmy Ellis started out strong and managed to stun and stagger Shavers into a corner and gave the latter a beating. Moments later, Shavers unleashed a right uppercut to Ellis’ face, knocking him out in the process.

What makes it memorable: Ellis was bent on ending the fight in the first round, but a hard-punching Shavers turned the tide with one single punch.

3. George Foreman vs. Joe Frazier – Jan. 22, 1973
Foreman was in complete domination in this bout, decking Frazier a total of six times in a matter of two rounds and finishing him in the second with a right uppercut.

What makes it memorable: Frazier was lifted off his feet and landed awkwardly after Foreman delivered that finishing right uppercut.

2. Ray Mercer vs. Francesco Damiani – Jan. 12, 1991

What makes it memorable:

Another force to reckon with when the 2009 college football season starts is the Texas Longhorns. This team has been rolling and this season, they might just do more than roll. With Colt McCoy leading the way for the Longhorns after a good year last season (3,859 passing yards, 34 TDs, 561 rushing yards, 11 rushing TDs), there is no way but up for this fella.

The Oklahoma Sooners is also slated to do well this year. Sporting the best offensive line ever, there is no doubt what this team could do – roll out and roll heavy.

You might need some Second half betting advice if you want those Benjamins after the clock runs out. You need to do some analysis and check how a team fares in the second half. Mayweather Injury: A Ploy to Increase Ticket Sales?

The Mayweather-Marquez fight has been postponed due to the supposed injury Mayweather received while training (doubters say that low ticket sales has been the major cause of the postponement). Of course, both Mayweather and Golden Boy Promotions denied such allegations, declaring Mayweather’s injury as legitimate.

Fans say otherwise.

They would rather watch Pacquiao-Cotto beatdown instead of a Mayweather-Marquez runaround. Which leads us to the most logical question, “Is Pacquiao the most bankable boxer today?” That will certainly be answered come September 19, the new scheduled date for Mayweather-Marquez.

Should the Pacquiao-Cotto fight generate more revenue than PBF-JMM, that will give Pac and his camp a big leverage in the negotitating table with Mayweather. That is, if Pacquiao and Mayweather win their respective bouts. Should that occur, expect no 50-50 split.

NFL 2009 Preseason Jitters

NFL 2009 is nearing its initial kick off, officially on September 10^th, 2009. Tennessee Titans and Pittsburgh Steelers will try to draw first blood on the said date and have a chance for an early dominance on the NFL Power Rankings. Next play day for the season will be on the 13^th, featuring 13 pairings that include great matchups such as NY Jets vs. Houston Texans, Minnesota Vikings vs. Cleveland Browns, and Washington Redskins against NY Giants.

That said, fans are already on their feet for this year’s latest NFL schedule on the preseason games. Second week of the preseason matchups will see undefeated Tennessee Titans (2-0) battle it out against the still winless yet highly touted Dallas Cowboys (0-1) on August 22^nd. On the day before that, winless teams Philadelphia Eagles (0-1) and Indianapolis Colts (0-1) will finally get a chance to snatch a victory.

Broncos’ new quarterback Tom Brandstater is said to see some action this season, since the Bronco’s only have two QBs in their lineup. Patriots will see whether they made the right choice by picking Rich Ohrnberger to play guard. Ohrnberger is hyped to fit into the Patriots’ zone-blocking scheme.

Since I live in the friendly city of Cagayan de Oro, the Frustrated Sports Analyst will do some public service and take you on a tour on the city’s best spots when it comes to sports. Simply put, I am your CDO Guide if all you care about is sports and other sporting events in the city.

Thanks to Manny “The Pacman” Pacquiao, a lot of alpha males from CDO and nearby municipalities are getting hooked to the sport of boxing. The rising popularity of the sport has paved the way for the construction of a top class boxing gym in the city – the one located in the Pelaez Sports Complex. The fee is really affordable and the equipment are very functional and well-maintained.

There are other boxing hubspots specked around the city. As your CDO Guide in sports and everything that is sports, I highly recommend the Elorde Boxing Gym, located in Xavier Square. Another great place where you can test your mettle against a punching bag is Sports Zone. The place also offers other martial arts lessons, including taekwondo and muay thai.

There are other martial arts schools around the city. The most visible would be the taekwondo gyms in Carmen, especially the one located in the Elipe Building fronting SSS. If you want to try your hands at boxing and other martial arts discipline, just check out the places I mentioned.

Gatti and Forrest: Vaya Con Dios

A lot has been happening in the world of boxing recently. There are tears and some cheers, definitely. Read on.

The Frustrated Sports Analyst , along with other boxing enthusiasts, mourns the untimely deaths of boxing legends Arturo Gatti and Vernon Forrest. Both men have given the sport their best and certainly the fans appreciated what they have done. Gatti was one of those types of fighters who never backed down despite strong opposition. In the face of a more skilled and more technically sound opponent, he remained the aggressor, always pushing forward, always putting on the pressure.

Forrest was a legend right from the start. He was the kind of a fighter that really gives his all every time he laced his gloves. Best remembered for his bouts against Shane Mosley, Forrest will forever be etched in the annals of boxing’s history.

Rest in peace, Gatti and Forrest.

Miami To Host Super Bowl 2010

For hardcore American football fanatics and everything that is American football, all roads lead to Miami, Florida. For a record 10^th time, the major South Florida City is given the privilege to host Super Bowl 2010, one of America’s greatest sporting events. That said, this will be the first time the game will be played in Continental United States for the first time in three decades.

Other major cities have contended for the chance to hold the Super Bowl 2010 to their turf- Houston, Texas and Atlanta, Georgia. As a matter of fact, the 2010 Super Bowl was originally awarded to New York City provided the city can come up with a new stadium. A stadium was built, but it did not pass the necessary requirements to get the government’s approval and Olympic bid. NFL executives voted to have the Pro Bowl in Miami via a simple majority on the third ballot.

Football in Miami will be a great deal to the sport. The last Super Bowl, which was held in Honolulu, Hawaii, has reflected a great following of the event. The 50,000-seat stadium in Hawaii was overflowing with fans. NFL organizers see a spike of ticket sales if the event is held in Miami, which houses the 72,000-seat Dolphins’ home stadium.

Another exciting news for American football fans is that majority of the tickets are priced lower than $100. A great news indeed in this economically battered times. NFL events analyst projected more than 150,000 fans will flock to Miami for the 2010 Super Bowl. Quite obviously, placing Pro Bowl in Miami makes American football more accessible to large fan bases.

As for the teams, I see the Arizona Cardinals making a great run in this event because of Larry Fitzgerald. The guy is a juggernaut once the ball is in the air. A clear indication of his talent and promise is when he set new records for receptions, yards and touchdowns in a single postseason last year. New England Patriots also have a great chance in the 2010 Super Bowl with Tom Brady returning behind center. Another promising club is the Pittsburgh Steelers. They have a great lineup for both offense and their impressive defense can win them games even without scoring.

Miami is the seat of the Miami-Dade County, which is also the most populous county in the state of Florida. Boasting a tropical climate, Miami is also one of the most frequented cities in the United States by tourists, as evidence by the number of hotels and other Miami vacation rentals and packages. Stable economy is quite visible in the city, indicated by the presence of business headquarters, particularly in the shipping and cruise industry, and large concentration of international banks. Also, Miami was named as "America's Cleanest City" by the Forbes Magazine for its year-round good air quality, wide green spaces, clean drinking water, clean streets and city-wide recycling programs.

Needless to say, Miami is a great venue for such event. The place has already hosted the championship games quite numerous times already and each time was a grand success. And it’s quite fitting too. It has been 10 years since the last Super Bowl was held Miami. With all the beaches and fine weather, expect a spike in people coming in not just for the Super Bowl, but for some fun in the sun and sand as well.

Cotto Victory Over Clottey Smudged with Controversy

The fight for the WBO Welterweight Championship has ended, but not as I expected it to. I said it would be a split decision victory for Clottey; it went to other guy instead.

In my previous article, I wrote that Miguel Cotto, whose record now stands at 34-1, would lose the advantage if he failed to knock Joshua Clottey out in the earlier rounds. But as it turns out, Cotto did send Clottey to the mat via a jab in the first round.

Clottey, who now drops to 34-3, did assert himself in the middle rounds, particularly in the fifth after Cotto got cut in his left eyebrow due to an accidental headbutt.

It was a good fight, but not the one you would have expected from the hype the players and the promoters had built around it.

Most of the fans expected a rain of straights and hooks, but instead, they got a splendid display of boxing defense from both fighters throughout the fight.

The earlier rounds were Cotto’s. Then, a shift in momentum saw Clottey coming back to life and into the fight. It was indeed a close fight, so close it could have gone either way.

The scorecards seemed to be the focal point in the fight and will serve as a possible source for another boxing controversy.

Judge John McKaie gave the fight to Cotto, 115-112, while Tom Miller saw Clottey winning the fight 114-113. Judge Don Trella scored the bout for Cotto, with a strangely whopping 116-111.

Can anyone explain how the last judge’s score came to be?

Even the media men present in the fight find the score “suspicious.” Clottey claims he was robbed of the victory and demanded a rematch immediately afterwards. He exclaimed that he was chasing Cotto all night long and that the fight should have been his.

A rematch may be deemed necessary, since Cotto’s win over the Ghana native was inconclusive, but regardless of future bouts, tonight is a happy night for Cotto, his team, and his fellow Puerto Ricans.
