Erik Spoelstra named NBA East All-Stars Coach

As the Miami Heat routed the Toronto Raptors 100-85 last Sunday in Toronto, the victory also clinched Erik Spoelstra's first assignment as the Eastern Conference's head coach for the 62nd All-Star Games this February 15th- to 17th at Houston, Texas. It was a sweet victory for Spoelstra as the New York Knicks' head coach Mike Woodson was also in line for the prestigious position.

Woodson failed to nab the coaching duties as the Knicks' standings in the Eastern Conference is a-half game short at 30-15, compared to the Heat's 30-14. It looks like Woodson will go to the Caribbean as planned.

Under Spoelstra's command are his stalwarts Dwyane Wade, Chris Bosh, and LeBron James, supported by Derrick Rose (Chicago Bulls), Dwight Howard (Orlando Magic), and Carmelo Anthony (New York Knicks). Completing the roster for the Eastern All-Stars are Luol Deng (CHI), Roy Hibbert (IND), Andre Iguodala (PHI), Joe Johnson (ATL), Paul Pierce (BOS), Rajon Rondo (BOS), and Derron Williams (NJ).

Opposite Spoelstra is veteran coach Gregg Popovich of the San Antonio Spurs. Popovich will be making his third NBA All-Star Games appearance as head coach.

Named captain of their respective teams are Wade and Chris Paul (LAC) for the Western Conference.
